THE MATERIAL

PUREVOLUME EXCLUSIVE SHOOT

FLAGSTAFF, AZ

As the former drummer for Flagstaff's very own pop rock band, Fight The Quiet, I've know these boys for a long time, and personally know the music we all produced.  After I left the group and they found a new drummer, they were in need of a new press shoot for shopping labels and for new promotion.  I wanted to create a shoot that captured the individuality of the band, and most importantly, each of the band members true personality.

So I had this idea, a picture in my mind of doing this shoot with Fight The Quiet involving huge buildings, a dark sky, and a primary color focus of blue.  Having done all the FTQ promos in the past, I've wanted to use blue in all my design work and photography, in order to make it easy for the public to associate the band with a specific color sceme.

I set up a makeshift "bluescreen" studio in my old apartment.  I shot the band in a variety of poses, both 'serious' and a more fun and laid-back style.

After the band shoot, I built several small skyscrapers, painted them grey, and created some windows.  Then I shot them in a small greenscreen setup as well.

These are the original images of the band and the buidlings:

After some mad photoshopping, combining and composing these images with images of a dark street and cloudy sky, the final result was made.  Check it out:

This photoshoot was a ton of fun, and made me realize that there really is no limit to what I can do with photography.  In a band?  Have an idea?  We can make it happen.

I have been friends with local rockers Telescope for several years now.  After finally completing their lineup, releasing a great record, and beginning to write for another, it was time for some new press photos.

We agreed it was important that they be captured very naturally. I wanted to let people know through the images I produced that they are still very Flagstaff, but ready to break out into the world.  Edgy and real all in one.

The first part of the shoot took place several miles outside of town, in the middle of nowhere really...  A beautiful sky, wide open field, and lots of cows.

It was the perfect setting for a very "Flagstaff" natural kind of shot.

After the sun went down we headed back to town, to the Hotel Weatherford.  If you've ever been to Flagstaff surely you know this place!  It's really old, and really cool and classic looking inside.  We found a few awesome spots, set up equipment, and fired away.

If you haven't had a chance to hear Telescope yet, you should really check em out.

I have been playing drums in local bands for the greater part of six years.  In that time I have met dozens of awesome bands, artists, and musicians all over the country.

About a year ago my band Fight The Quiet played with San Diego favorites "The Material" and I was instantly a fan.  They quickly became great friends, even before I heard how great they were on stage.

A year or so and a few great shows together later, and I found out my band was to play with The Material in Flagstaff again for a show they had on tour.  I had to book a shoot.  These guys are great and I wanted to see how I could help them in their journey straight to the top!

The concept was simple:

Lots of recycled newspaper+empty garage+camera=awesome photo shoot.

We consumed lots of tasty coffee and barely finished the shoot in time* before they had to leave town for their next show.

*(The Material are out of control crazy kids.  Waaaay too much fun to get any work done:)

The shoot was a total success, and for sure my favorite group to work with.  These guys have so much talent and are a true pleasure to be around.

The awesome part is that just before the shoot, they found out they were to be a featured artist on the front page of a very popular indy music site, Purevolume.  The shoot then became an exclusive release for their spot.

DJ REFLEX

PROMO SHOOT

My great friend and fellow Flagstaff local Nathan Cain asked me to take some updated promotional shots that he would use for his website, tour posters, and album art.

I came up with the concept of stacking tons of speakers up, and setting him up in front of them with his turntables like he was playing a show. Luckily he runs all his own sound and has plenty of huge speakers, because the man is 6'8" and I wasn't sure I could get an angle where I could fit him in the lens!

(just kidding Nate:)

Here I am, making sure the sound is crisp and clear.

Sure, Nate's great at spinnin' the tables, but I just had to make sure he knew what he was doing...

In the end, the shoot turned out great.  Nate is an awesome DJ and so much fun to work with.

Yosemite National Park

Well I just got back from a truly amazing experience.  Landscape photography has always been a deep passion of mine, and the opportunity to take my cameras to one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world is one I will never forget.

With four of my very best friends I was fortunate enough to explore the raging power of water, depths of the valley, and the heights of the massive granite walls.

The crew!  Man that was some good spaghetti!  Sippin on Sierra Nevadas, since we are in the Sierra Nevadas, of course:)

Take a look at the GALLERY section for a few new images from this California adventure.  Been to Yosemite or want to take a trip?  Send me a message and we'll talk about our experiences!

Nate Stone

Album Cover Shoot

When Nate asked me to conceptualize, photograph, and design the layout for his upcoming solo release, I was truly honored.  This was something I had never done before ,and I was very excited to take on such a rewarding assignment.

The title for his album is "Love and Tragedy."  He already had an idea to capture the mood of this title with an awesome art piece created by a friend of ours, Shea Whitham, as the centerpiece.

The shoot involved a chair, a lamp, a hat, and an empty frame.  Simple.

Before shooting, I had an idea of what I wanted the final product to look like, and that it would involve a great deal of post-production.

So after a few hundred shots, with a few different furniture arrangements, dozens of hours on the computer and 245 cups of Yerba Mate, the final project emerges!

Check it out at www.myspace.com/natestonemusic

It's pretty much amazing.
